Disqus History

Disqus began to be developed midway through 2007 by Daniel Ha and Jason Yan. Ha and Yan had known each other since 7th grade, and began their Disqus development while they were students at the University of California. Disqus actually began as just a unique domain registration before it evolved into the commenting platform.

The Disqus team applied and were accepted into the startup incubator Y Combinator. Y Combinator has helped launch a number of well known companies including Stripe, Airbnb, DoorDash, Dropbox and more. Disqus was able to secure 10 million in funding by May 2011 thanks to Y Combinator. As of 2011, 3/4 of websites who were using third-party commenting systems were using Disqus. Disqus was acquired by Zeta Global in December of 2017, but continued operations as usual.
