Validating your domain with ICANN

This article discusses the ICANN domain validation process.

As of 2013, ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) now requires validation of the registrant WHOIS contact information whenever you:

  • Register a new domain.
  • Update the registrant WHOIS contact information for an existing domain.

Verifying a new domain registration

When you purchase and register a new domain, you receive a message at the e-mail address you specified as the domain's registrant. To activate the domain, click the hyperlink in the message.

The verification message is not sent from an A2 Hosting e-mail address, but from [email protected]. You may need to whitelist this address in your e-mail client so it does not get marked as spam. The subject line in the verification message is Important Notice Regarding Your Domain Name(s).
You have 15 days to click the link and verify the registration. If you do not verify the registration by the end of the 15-day deadline, the domain is suspended.

Verifying updated domain registrant information

When you update the registrant WHOIS contact information (first name, last name, or e-mail address) for an existing domain, you receive a message at the e-mail address you specified as the new registrant. To verify the new registrant contact information, click the hyperlink in the message.

The verification message is not sent from an A2 Hosting e-mail address, but from [email protected]. You may need to whitelist this address in your e-mail client so it does not get marked as spam. The subject line in the verification message is Important Notice Regarding Your Domain Name(s).

Domain name status codes

Domain name status codes provide information about the status of a registered domain name. All domains have at least one status code, and sometimes more.

To obtain the status code information for a domain, run a WHOIS lookup. For detailed information about all of the possible domain status codes and what they mean, please visit https://icann.org/epp.
